# Write Off Your Next Delivery Truck in Year One: What the New Federal Deduction Means for Building Centres

On September 15, Ottawa announced a tax change that every building centre owner thinking about a truck should know about. It's called the [Productivity Mega Deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/news/2026/09/government-of-canada-introduces-new-productivity-mega-deduction-to-boost-canadas-advantage-as-the-most-competitive-g7-country-for-new-business-inve.html), and it lets a business deduct the full cost of most equipment, trucks included, in the first year instead of spreading it out over many years.

The government called it one of the biggest changes to the business tax system in half a century. For a dealer replacing a delivery truck, it changes the math in a real way.

I'm not an accountant, and you'll want yours involved before you act on any of this. This is what I know so far, and how I'd approach it.

## What changed

Under the old rules, you deducted the cost of a truck a slice at a time. A heavy truck over 11,788 kg wrote down at 40% a year on a declining balance. A lighter truck wrote down at 30%. On a $150,000 flatbed with a crane, it took years before you'd deducted most of the cost.

Under the new rules, eligible equipment acquired on or after September 15, 2026 can be deducted in full in the year it becomes available for use. The government says it's making this permanent, so you're not racing a sunset date. Ottawa released draft legislation with the announcement, but it still has to pass, so confirm the final rules with your accountant before you count on it.

## Which trucks qualify

Most building centre delivery trucks should fit. Heavy trucks over 11,788 kg are covered. So are the medium-duty flatbeds, cube vans and crane trucks most dealers run.

The government did exclude "certain vehicles" in the lighter classes. Based on the draft rules, the exclusion targets passenger vehicles, and only when they're used or were assembled outside Canada. A work truck with three seats that hauls lumber most of the time generally isn't a passenger vehicle under the tax rules. A crew-cab pickup that's mostly used to run people around might be. That call depends on how each truck is set up and used, so ask your accountant about any pickup before you assume it qualifies.

Used trucks can qualify too, as long as you or someone related to you didn't own it before.

## The timing catch

The deduction lands in the year the truck becomes available for use. That means the truck has to be delivered and ready to work. An order alone doesn't count.

This is where people will get caught. If your fiscal year ends December 31 and you order a spec'd flatbed in November, it may not be built and upfitted until February. The deduction moves to next year. If you want it this year, you need to order early enough for the truck to land before your year-end.

Talk to your accountant about your year-end now, then talk to me about realistic build times.

## Why this year lines up

The new deduction arrives at the same time as two other pressures I've been writing about. The 2027 emissions rules are expected to push up the price of new diesel trucks, and tariffs keep adding cost to chassis and bodies.

Put those together and a building centre that was already planning to replace a truck in the next year or two has a good reason to look harder at doing it sooner. You'd lock in current pricing, get a pre-2027 engine and take the full deduction in the first year.

## Don't buy a truck for a tax break

I'll say this plainly because I've seen it go wrong. A deduction lowers your tax. It doesn't make a truck you didn't need into a good purchase. A truck sitting in your yard still costs you insurance, licensing and depreciation every month.

The right move hasn't changed. Figure out which trucks need replacing, spec the right truck for the work, and then use the deduction to make that purchase cost less.

If you want to look at which of your trucks are due, and what you'd need to order to have one delivered before your year-end, give me a call. We'll get you the spec and price, and your accountant can take it from there.
