# The 2027 Emissions Rules: What's Changed Since I Last Wrote About Them

[In February of last year, I wrote](https://trinitytrucksales.ca/phil-aitkens-bi-weekly/model-year-2027-diesel-emissions-rules) that the 2027 diesel emissions rules could add $20,000 to $30,000 to the price of a new truck. A lot has happened since then. The deadline is still 2027, but the number has come down.

Since Homecoming, I've had more than one conversation with our partners at the truck manufacturers, and they're all saying the same thing. Big changes are coming with the 2027 engines, prices will go up, and building centres who need trucks should get orders in before year-end.

## The standard held

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency set the rule in 2022. It cuts the nitrogen oxide limit for heavy-duty engines from 200 milligrams per horsepower-hour to 35, about an 80% reduction. That covers the diesels in most of the Class 6, 7 and 8 trucks building centres run, from an F-750 to a tandem crane truck.

Plenty of people expected the rule to disappear after the change in Washington. It didn't. In late 2025, the EPA confirmed it would keep the 35 mg standard and the 2027 start date.

Canada's emission rules follow the EPA's, and the manufacturers build one engine for both markets. If the U.S. standard changes, the trucks on Canadian lots change with it.

## The cost came down

In July, the EPA proposed a set of changes to soften the rule. The biggest one cuts the emissions warranty the manufacturers have to carry. Under the original rule, a medium heavy-duty engine would have needed emissions coverage for 280,000 miles and ten years. The proposal takes that back to 100,000 miles and five years, where it sits today.

That warranty was a large part of the projected price increase. The EPA estimates the change saves roughly $4,000 to $6,000 per engine. The proposal also pushes the longer durability requirements out to 2030 and replaces the dreaded DEF derate, where the truck slows to a crawl over a fluid problem, with warnings and alarms by the 2029 model year.

Industry estimates I've seen now put the added cost at around US$8,000 to $12,000 per truck. That's a lot better than $20,000 to $30,000. Remember, though, that it's in U.S. dollars, it comes before exchange and tariffs, and the rule isn't final. The comment period closed August 29, and the EPA hasn't said when it will publish the final version.

## Why I still think timing matters

I've been through every major emissions change since the 1990s. The 2007 particulate filters and the 2010 switch to DEF both followed the same pattern. Buyers rushed to get the last of the old engines. Build slots filled up. The first year of new engines came with teething problems that kept trucks in the shop while technicians learned the new systems.

I don't expect 2027 to be as rough, because the technology is an evolution of what's on trucks today. But the pattern holds. Pre-2027 build slots are getting tight, and once they're gone, you're paying the new price for a first-year engine.

The used market will feel it too. A good used truck with a pre-2027 engine will hold its value better than it would have otherwise, which matters if you're thinking about trading in.

## What to do about it

If you plan to replace a truck in the next 18 months, talk to someone now. You don't have to sign anything this week, but you need your spec settled so you can grab a build slot when one opens.

Don't buy a truck you don't need to beat a price increase. A truck that sits in your yard costs you payments, insurance and depreciation every month whether it runs or not. The math only works if you were going to buy anyway.

Look at your oldest units. If a truck is already costing you more to fix than it's worth, 2026 pricing is a good reason to replace it now instead of nursing it into 2027. Our fleet cost tracker can help you figure out which trucks fall into that group.

And if you do end up with a 2027 engine, make sure your shop has the training and diagnostic tools for it before the truck needs its first repair.

If you'd like to talk through which of your trucks should move before year-end, call me. I'd rather have that conversation in September than in February.
